Alpacas Showing Off Their Summer Hairdos

by Creation Museum on May 26, 2016

You know it’s time for summer at the Creation Museum when our petting zoo alpacas get their yearly haircut! With the winter over, the heat is coming. Our alpacas love their summer hairdos because they can stay cool, especially when they’re outside greeting guests.

It’s pretty fun to see the difference right after they’re shaved. This is Rico, our huarizo (half alpaca and half llama—a hybrid which is possible because alpacas and llamas are of the same animal kind)—right after his buzz cut.

And this is Rico’s friend Yankee, who is much happier now that the hair is out of his eyes.

He may look like a baby deer for a little while, but he’s happy to be able to see all of the guests who come to visit him.

Alfonso, our third alpaca, looked pretty sweet too, after his new do.

It’s great to be able to collect all the fiber and give it to a good cause. Some is used here at the Creation Museum for animal enrichment, and the rest is made into yarn or other products.

Come say hi to Rico, Yankee, and Alfonoso next time you’re here, and don't forget to visit before the end of June to receive four free child tickets with the purchase of two adult tickets!
