Animal Kinds

Dinosaurs and Dragons

After the Flood, the animals began to spread out and fill the earth, while the people disobeyed God’s command until they were forced to separate after language confusion at the Tower of Babel (Genesis 10–11).

For many reasons, some animals weren’t able to survive in the post-Flood world; they eventually became extinct. The various kinds of dinosaurs eventually succumbed to extinction, although not before humans left written records of encounters with the colossal beasts and carvings in stone. One man who knew about dinosaurs first-hand was Job. Check out his description of a possible sauropod dinosaur in Job chapter 40.

Job’s account has been preserved over time in the Bible. Other accounts have changed over time as they’ve been passed down from parent to child. These “dragon legends,” as we call them today, provide intriguing insights into how humans and dinosaurs interacted in the not-too-distant past.

The Great Flood

In the beginning (about 6,000 years ago), God created the heavens and the earth. When He was finished, He declared His six-day-old creation “very good” (Genesis 1:31). Soon, however, sin entered the paradise when Adam disobeyed the command of God (Genesis 3; Romans 5:12). Along with sin came its punishment: death (Genesis 3:19; Romans 6:23). From that time, all humans, as children of Adam and Eve, were born sinners; everyone rebelled against the Creator (Romans 3:23).

Sixteen hundred years later, “the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth” (Genesis 6: 5). He determined to send an earth-covering flood in judgment on man’s wickedness. Only Noah and those with him in the Ark, including two of every kind of land-dwelling, air-breathing animal and bird, were saved from the watery catastrophe (Genesis 6–9). When the year-long Flood was over, God promised that He would never again flood the entire earth with water. The sign of this promise is the rainbow (Genesis 9:8–16).

The earth-inundating judgment on mankind’s wickedness left its mark on the surface of the earth. In its fury, the water ripped up and deposited sediments around the world, burying animals and plants in its path. Eventually, these sediments hardened into rock, and the buried creatures fossilized. Plant matter became today’s coal deposits.

Canyons, such as the Grand Canyon, offer opportunity to observe massive rock layers. Fossils abound from sea shores to mountain tops.

The scars from the global Flood remain, serving as a reminder of the holy and merciful God who punishes sin but offers salvation from sin to those who will receive it (John 3:15; Romans 6:23, 10:9–10).

The Bible and Astronomy

While not a science textbook, the Bible is accurate when it touches on astronomy. Consider the following Bible-based claims:

• The earth is round (Isaiah 40:22; Job 26:10).
• The earth floats in space (Job 26:7). Although poetical, this verse in Job seems to suggest that the earth floats in space; and indeed the earth does float in space. We now have pictures of the earth taken from space that show it floating in the cosmic void. The earth literally hangs upon nothing, just as the Bible suggests.
• The universe is expanding (Isaiah 40:22). The Bible indicates in several places that the universe has been “stretched out” or expanded. Most astronomers today believe that the universe is indeed expanding. In the 1920s, astronomers discovered that virtually all clusters of galaxies appear to be moving away from all other clusters; this indicates that the entire universe is expanding.

We can trust the Word of the God who “gives the sun for light by day and the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night” (Jeremiah 31:35). And we can marvel at His handiwork as we study the heavens that declare His glory.

The Bible teaches that God created the entire universe in six days (Genesis 1; Exodus 20:11). We know from the genealogies and other events recorded in Scripture that this creation happened about 6,000 years ago. The scientific evidence is consistent with a young universe. One example among many (e.g., lunar recession, spiral galaxies, comets) is the magnetic fields of planets.

Many of the planets of the solar system have strong magnetic fields. These fields are caused by electrical currents that decay with time. We can even measure this decay of the earth’s magnetic field: it gets weaker every year. If the planets were really billions of years old (as evolutionists believe) then their magnetic fields should be extremely weak by now. Yet they are not. A reasonable explanation for this is that these planets are only a few thousand years old, as the Bible teaches.

The Bible is true when it touches on earthly things, and it provides the true “heavenly” message of salvation through Jesus Christ, who died on the cross and rose again. He paid the penalty for sin on behalf of those who receive the free gift of eternal life by repenting of their sin and believing in Him (Romans 3:23, 6:23, 10:9).

Operational and Origin Science

Some people claim that “science” has shown the Bible can’t be true. However, it is helpful to distinguish between the different types of science.

1. Operation science attempts to discover truth by performing repeatable experiments in a controlled environment to find patterns of behavior. For example, we can test gravity, study the spread of disease, or observe speciation in the lab or in the wild. Both creationists and evolutionists use this kind of science, which has given rise to computers, space shuttles, and cures for diseases.
2. Origin science attempts to discover truth by examining reliable eyewitness testimony (if available), and circumstantial evidence (such as pottery, fossils, and canyons). Because the past cannot be observed directly, assumptions greatly affect how scientists interpret what they see. For example, how was the Grand Canyon formed? One interpretation may be based on secular assumptions of slow change over millions of years, while another is based on biblical assumptions about rapid change during Noah’s Flood.

With this, we can see the problems with the statement “evolution is science, but the Bible is religion.” Molecules-to-man evolution is not proven by operation science; instead, it is a belief about the past based on anti-biblical assumptions.

The Bible, in contrast, is the eyewitness testimony of the Creator, who tells us what happened to produce the earth, the different kinds of life, the fossils, the rock layers, and indeed the whole universe. The Bible gives us the true, “big picture” starting assumptions for origin science.
